Vote for an Underdog!
I don't often do this but a very good friend of mine (Tim Crompton) and his band (The Highwire) are being promoted on BBC Radio 2. He's been shortlisted in the 'Pick 'n Mix' competition but he's up against MGTM who are signed to Sony. Tim embodies the true spirit of a musical artist looking for a lucky break. He's suffered several setbacks during the last few years but he's doggedly kept to his recording schedule and has just released a new album.
You can listen to his material HERE.
Please vote for him by emailing BBC Radio 2 and voting for 'The Highwire - Easy'.
“… psych-pop soundscapes of a billowing expansiveness that recalls MBV, Spiritualized and Mercury Rev at their most abundant … if you’re looking for the album to soundtrack your spring and summer escapism, Ahead of the Rain is it.” Sunday Times, Breaking Act March 30 2008
“… lusciously woozy affair, recalling the hazy, narcotic ballads of US dream-popsters Galaxie 500…potent stuff…” Q
" MBV - meets - Mercury Rev... gorgeous..." Uncut
“…The High Wire’s debut is full of such glimmering, sun-kissed guitar pop that it’ll banish the blues in an instant.” NME
“…a wistful dream of a record…” Clash
“Soft, Shoegazerish bliss…” The Guardian

Why I Love Techno (Part 2)
Digital Gluttony
The National Post has a great article on the side-effects of free p2p music - hard-drives that are full of music you'll never listen to (yes, I'm a member of that last.fm group mentioned in that article, sadly). The best part of the article however is the brief discussion of how bundling (in the form of albums) forced consumers to pay out $15 for maybe one or two tracks they really wantedin the 80's and 90's. With the advent of single track digital downloads via Amazon and iTunes, this is no longer the case yet every single article detailing the decline of the music industry cites p2p downloads as the main reason. I've been convinced for a while that the unbundling efffect has been a significant contributor. Anyone up for an empirical study?
For those asking about the next installment of NYUB, it's a few week's off. My desktop's motherboard decided to go on strike and it's still being fixed. Hang in there!

Justice Xmas Mix
I'm a big fan of Justice - the Parisian electronic duo. Apparently they were asked to do a mix for the Fabric team but when they sent it through it was too short and not quite to their tastes (judging from the actual mix, probably too ecclectic). Somebody has sourced it and it's available for download. It's absolutely superb.

Just to let you know, I've created a (simple) NYUB fan site on Facebook. The way they've set up these fan sites is not very conducive for podcasts but I'm sure the functionality will evolve.
